In healthier financial times, if you remember that far back, finding the perfect present for the person who has everything was a real chore. It had to be unusual, wacky, even certainly expensive (because if they really had everything, they would be loaded and expect a pricey present) for those who seem to have everything – maybe not in the life, love and spirituality sense, but very much so in the material sense. If they collect things, say, vintage cameras, pinball machines, robot toys or airline paraphernalia, there is a way to find that stuff and accumulate it and build special shelves, or even extra rooms, or garages, to store the collections in and covet them. The other problem was that if they have everything, they feel embarrassed if you get them something, because they have EVERYTHING compared to which, you probably have not as much, or very little, or even nothing, if you are going through some sort of minimalist phase or are rather skint. But not so skint as to buy a present.
Getting special gifts for the person who seems to have everything (except that one thing you are going to get them) is not as difficult as it used to be. You can do most, if not all of your searching online and just key in a few essential words, such as «gift» «Special» and «affordable» One good thing about the person who «has everything» is that they probably have a bunch of things that everyone else has, only in better nick and the latest and so on. What they lack are imaginative gifts, ones that are quirky, presents that show that yeah, yeah, even though you have everything, you don’t have THIS.
So what is THIS? What are these special gifts and where do you find them? Some off key thinking is required. It’s probably got to be a little bit quirky, amusing and maybe not too large, because they have so much stuff already. First of all, presents don’t have to be a thing, as such, but can be an experience. Having said this, you have to do a bit of nosing about or know the person really well to understand what type of experience he or she would really like. Perhaps a multi millionaire who sits behind a big desk all day wants to fulfil his childhood ambition of driving a Double Decker bus or a tank. Or, if he or she, in the unlikely circumstances has already done these things, you might consider an unusual or funny object. One bestseller that springs to mind is sunshine in a jar. Now you may think it’s a con, but it’s actually a very pretty jar powered by LED lights, which sort of does give the look of sunshine, something everyone who lives in the UK wants to bottle up.
But what do women want? Not in the Freudian sense, but in the «Amuse me» sense. Pampering special gifts are very popular, but then again, the woman who has everything might have a lot of time on her hands for pampering and spas and such like. One thing British women rarely do is afternoon tea. It’s what we are famous for, but we don’t actually do it. School runs, calories, that sort of thing. After toying with lamb’s lettuce with her ladies who lunch and two hour power yoga class, she might simply feel proper afternoon tea with cakes and clotted cream is a well deserved treat. She will love it, particularly if you say, «You’re just getting too thin. You need cake.» A verbal prompting is the icing on the cake, so to speak.
Women also like to look at themselves, do their lippy, make sure the foundation doesn’t end abruptly at the neckline so why not indulge her with an engraved silver compact mirror? These are things of elegance and beauty (accompanying card hint: write «just like your lovely self») and special because they are personalised. Of course, a romantic evening out with your special lady might involve a drink or two. Being a woman who has everything, she will have been to the poshest bars and hotel lobbies. Why not a day out under the bridge of a river (any river, but the Seine seems right) and provide her with a personalised pink engraved hip flask, which she can fill with the spirit of her choice. Don’t angst about it. No woman really has EVERYTHING but a well thought out present is a good place to start.
