Exploratorium Offers On the Move Extravaganza of San Francisco Activities

The iconic Exploratorium has packed up over 43 years of exhibits, gadgets, laboratories and archives to move into its new home at Pier 15 on San Franciscos Embarcadero. To celebrate this historic move, on March 10, 2013 the Exploratorium launches On the Move, a pre-opening festival thats part road show, part street festival, and all Exploratorium. A fleet of 10 On the Move trucks, each outfitted with different museum exhibits and experiences, will travel to three venues in San Francisco: the Embarcadero outside Pier 15, the Bayview neighborhood and the Mission District. These events in San Francisco will bring the Exploratoriums curious blend of sensation, surprise and discovery to neighborhoods and city streets prior to the museums opening day on April 17, 2013. All On the Move activities are free and open to the public.

Look for art cars, science activities, performances, food, films, music, and more. Festivities will culminate with evening programs and a spectacular finale at Pier 15. Activities on March 10 will be from 11 a.m. 10 p.m. on the Embarcadero in front of Pier 15; 11 a.m.4 p.m. at the Bayview Opera House Ruth Williams Memorial Theatre, 4705 Third Street, San Francisco; and 11 a.m. 4 p.m. in the Mission District at Buena Vista Horace Mann School, 3351 23rd Street, San Francisco.

Highlights include mobile versions of popular exhibits and activities such as Colored Shadows, Shadow Box and Paint with Light. The Exploratoriums bio lab will outfit a truck with a bioluminescent theme, including displays of photobacteria and glowing worms, while another truck outfitted with monochromatic light from sodium vapor lamps will seem drab and dingy until a flashlight exploration reveals hidden colors everywhere. Participants can play with exhibits like Giant Chair, Turbulent Orb, Your Fathers Nose, and Catenary Arch, see pedal powered contraptions by Fun Bike Unicorn Club, and enjoy presentations and activities by community partners and members of the local arts and science communities.

In the Mission District, participants will see cross-cultural dance performances by Cuicacalli escuela de danza, and groove to high-energy beats with inter-generational performing ensemble Loco Bloco. Art cars by Oakland artists Jon Sarriugarte and Kyrsten Mate, including a giant snail and a miniature Zeppelin, will also appear. A paint-by-color mural, created for the Exploratorium by a Precita Eyes muralist, will offer a collaborative art opportunity for the community.

Along the Embarcadero, a mobile front porch (really an art car created by Zac Carroll) will serve as a stage for musicians, while a corral of six motorized miniature horses created by Mission Pony will offer rides and interactive games (four of the ponies will also be onsite in the Mission District). The Pacific Pinball Museums mobile Lil Ju Ju will be onsite for pinball wizards in the crowd. Aspiring animators can visit the Exploratoriums Cinema Arts truck for a Scratch Animation Workshop in which participants use impromptu tools like nails, sandpaper, markers and paint to create a new direct animation short on a few feet of 16mm film. Each length of film will be spliced together and shown during the Cinema Arts evening screening at Pier 15.

The Nautilus, an art car in the shape of a submarine created by Chistopher Bently, Sean Orlando and the Five Ton Crane Arts Group, will visit the Bayview neighborhood. There will be performances and a live broadcast by KPOO. In both the Bayview and Mission locations, the Exploratoriums Cinema Arts program will do Itinerant Filmmaking, encouraging community members to don costumes and act out a special script, which will be spliced together and shown outside at the Cinema Arts truck at Pier 15 that very evening.

All On the Move San Francisco activities are free and open to the public.
