Dr. Maria Harper-Marinick, ExecutiveVice Chancellor and Provost of the Maricopa Community Colleges, has been honored by the Victoria Foundation with its Dr. Alfredo G. de los Santos, Jr., Award.

The award, presented at a ceremony earlier today, recognizes an exemplary individual who provides outstanding service to the greater Latino community through teaching, program creation or expansion, and educational innovations that directly benefit Latinos.

There is no investment more valuable to a community than education, said Pete Garcia, President of the Victoria Foundation. Students at higher learning institutions create ideas and have discussions that shape the future. People such as Dr. Harper-Marinick who take the time to cultivate student innovations and independence are to be commended for their dedication to educating Hispanic youth, adults and students of all ages.

Dr. Harper-Marinick provides active, engaged leadership and sets the higher education standard, said Dr. Rufus Glasper, Chancellor of the Maricopa Community Colleges. Her work ethic and lifelong commitment to our students is unmatched. I am proud to work with her to achieve our mission of helping students achieve their educational and training goals.

As the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, Dr. Harper-Marinick is the chief academic and student officer for more than 270,000 students who attend a Maricopa Community College each year. In these roles, she oversees curriculum; academic research and assessment; student

affairs; strategic planning and institutional effectiveness; university relations, transfer, and articulation; grants development and management; international education; faculty professional growth and development; high-school-to-college pathways and outreach programs; workforce development; and small business development.

Dr. Harper-Marinick came to Arizona in 1982 as a Fulbright Scholar. She holds a Ph.D. in Educational Technology and a Masters Degree in Instructional Media from Arizona State University and a Licentiate in School Administration and Pedagogy from Universidad Nacional Pedro Henriquez Urena in the Dominican Republic.

The Victoria Foundation supports college and university students as part of its mission to promote lifelong education of Arizona Latinos. The awards recognize higher education leaders who inspire more Latino students in Arizona to pursue college degrees. Dr. de los Santos, for whom this award was named, is a nationally renowned leader in higher education and a former Vice Chancellor at the Maricopa Community Colleges.

The Maricopa Community Colleges includes 10 colleges Chandler-Gilbert, Estrella Mountain, GateWay, Glendale, Mesa, Paradise Valley, Phoenix, Rio Salado, Scottsdale and South Mountain. It also includes the Maricopa Skill Center, Southwest Skill Center, and
