Due to its ideal farming land, Mexicali attracted various indigenous groups including the Cocopah and Yuman tribes.  The Spanish presence wasn’t felt until 1775 when the explorer, Juan Bautista de Anza, travelled there.  Once more, Mexicali’s fertile land attracted a wave of immigrant farmers including Native Americans, Chinese, Americans, Japanese, and even Indian.  In fact, cotton was Mexicali’s prime crop.  Because of this wave of migration, today Mexicali is Mexico’s most culturally diverse city.  This diversity can be particularly seen in the cuisine.  The end of the 19th century saw a huge wave of Chinese immigrants and their presence is still felt due to the numerous amounts of Chinese Food Restaurants.  Mexicali officially became a city on March 14, 1903.  Although agriculture was what first attracted settlers to this wondrous city, today farming has dropped dramatically and is quickly being replaced by other industries.

Mexicali is well-known for its exhausting hot climate, particularly during the summer where temperatures have been known to reach 124 degrees Fahrenheit.  Nevertheless, the winters are quite incredible, for a winter is Mexicali is like the perfect spring.  I suggest visiting the city during the fall and winter months, not only will the weather be delightful but during this time the city really comes to life.  For instance, at the end of September through early October, Mexicali has the Fiestas del Sol (Sun Holidays).  This is one of the city’s most important events; it is a combination of fair, concerts, and cultural expos.  Another annual event one must attend is the Baja Prog, which is a four-day international festival featuring the most renowned progressive rock groups.  If you’re the business type, then I recommend you check out Agrobaja, which is a highly respected agricultural exposition.

If you’re looking to get a taste of culture, you must visit at least one of the city’s eleven theaters including Teatro del Estado (State Theater), Teatro Universitario (University Theater), or Teatro de Casa de la Cultura (Theater of the House of Culture).  These theaters feature famous plays among other events all year long.  Visiting Mexicali’s numerous museums is another must.  One of the most interesting museums is Sol del Nino (Children’s Sun).  This particular museum is dedicated to teaching children about science, technology, art, mathematics, physics, and the environment among other scientific disciplines; but as an adult, you too will have a lot of fun.  In fact, bring the whole family and participate in incredibly scientific experiments.   Another place ideal for the entire family is Bosque y Zoologico de la Ciudad (Forest and Zoo of the City).  As the name depicts it, this is a combination of a zoo and a forest, but you will also find a museum (with mummies), a river, and a place to camp.  In order to learn about Mexicali’s history and past inhabitants you’ll have to set foot in Museo de la Universidad Autonoma de Baja California (Museum of the University of Baja California).  This museum is particularly impressive in that it has five different rooms along with an auditorium, a library of photographs, and a library of historic documents.

As a metropolis, Mexicali can be distinguished by the countless amounts of activities you can enjoy.  Plaza de Toros (Bullring) is a great place to start.  It fits about eleven thousand enthusiasts and you’ll see famous bullfighters from Mexico and Spain.  When the Matadors  have the day off, the bullring becomes a concert hall and it has features some of the greatest acts including Placido Domingo among others.  Mexicali also has a complete 18-hole golf course with interesting water hazards.  If bowling is more your sport, then Bol Bol Boliche (Bol Bol Bowling) is the place to show off your skills.  Not only is it very modern but it has more than 35 lanes.

For the outdoors kind of individuals, Mexicali has the activity for you.  Take your sand buggy or your quads and enjoy a day in the sand dunes or participate in an off-road race.  Why not bring your fishing pole and enjoy a day of sweet water fishing in one of the more than 4,000 miles of canals where you can catch anything from tilapia, catfish, and bass among other fish.  Rio Hardy (Hardy River), Laguna Bogard (Bogard Lagoon) and El Caiman are three of the best spots to fish.  Hunting is another activity you can enjoy.  During the right season you can hunt quail, rabbits, doves, pheasants, and you might even get a glimpse of a puma!

After all these activities you’ll surely be hungry.  As mentioned earlier, due to its cultural diversity Mexicali boasts of having the most international cuisine.  Pampas do Brasil is a most excellent Brazilian restaurant featuring the best cuts of meat.  Trattoria La Piazza hits the spot if you’re looking for that Italian taste.  Sakura Restaurant serves the best Japanese food and they cook it right in front of you.  For some authentic Mexican seafood I recommend Los Arcos or my personal favorite, Laguna Azul (Blue Lagoon).  Nevertheless, you can’t leave Mexicali without having some top quality Chinese food and for that I recommend, another personal favorite, China Town Restaurant but there’s many others to choose from.

Lastly, you must enjoy Mexicali at night with all the glimmering neon lights.  Enjoy a drink at UNI Irish Pub with a live rock band.  If you want that authentic Mexican Cantina experience, then go next door to El Cotorro (The Parrot).  If you want to enjoy some modern music and show off your moves on the dance floor, then dance your way to Blu.  Kilos and Beer is my personal favorite; here they serve the best carne asada, strawberry martinis, and chabelas .  This place also features a live band indoors and a more relax environment in the outdoor patio.  La Salita (The Living room), Applebee’s, and Red Lion are only a few of the many bars and nightclubs that the city has.  The best part is that they’re all located within walking distance of each other.
