GLOBAL WARMING
To begin, it is necessary to define what global warming is:
Global warming is a term having two definitions:
1. The observed rise in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans over the last few decades.
2. A theory to predict changes based on simulated computer models.
The terms global warming and greenhouse effect are sometimes used synonymously, but they are not the same:
the greenhouse effect, in conjunction with pollution, contributes to global warming. The planet's increase in temperature is not something new; temperatures have been increasing since the mid-19th century.
In addition to climatic changes, other aspects are creating changes. Current anthropological therories predict that global warming will continue to increase due to greenhouse gasses.

KYOTO PROTOCOL
The Kyoto Protocol is an agreement promoted by IPPC (Inter-government Panel of Climate Change) that promotes the reduction of pollutants, especially CO2. The protocol has been criticized and called unjust because normal economic development and industrialization entails increased emissions of polluting agents. The heating of the climatic system is unequivocal, as is demonstrated by the observed increase in world temperatures of air and seas, the melting of ice caps, and the increase of world sea levels.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
-change to products of lower energy consumption (compact fluorescent or led's). CFLs use 60% less electricity than traditional lighting, and a change would reduce the emission of carbon dioxide by 140 kilos annually.
-lower the thermostat two degrees in winter and raise it two degrees in summer. Adjusting heating and air conditioning could reduce CO2 emissions by 900 kilos yearly.
-reduce hot water use. Less hot water can be used by installing low pressure showers and by washing clothes in cold or lukewarm water.
-use a clothesline instead of a clothes dryer. If clothes are air-dryed for half the year, CO2 is reduced by 320 kilos per year.
-buy products that use recycled paper. Producing recycled paper consumes between 70% to 90% less energy and helps to reduce world-wide deforestation.
-buy fresh produce. Producing frozen foods consumes ten times more energy.
-avoid buying packaged products. A 10% reduction can save 540 kilos of CO2 per year from being released into the atmosphere.
-use fewer electric devices or at least those used for leisure.
-unplug radios, television, games, etc. that are not being used at the moment.
-choose a more fuel efficient vehicle. A new vehicle can save 1360 kilos of CO2 per year if it yields two kilometers per liter of fuel (the best is to buy a hybrid vehicle or one that uses biofuel)
-drive efficiently: utilize adequate acceleration to velocity ratio, neither brake nor accelerate suddenly, and maintain RPM as low as be possible.
- avoid rush-hour traffic.
- use the car less: walk, bicycle, carpool, and public transportation are options. Reducing the use of your own vehicle by 15 kilometros weekly decreases CO2 emmissions by 230 kilograms per year.
- live near the workplace or your children's schools.
-do not travel often or far for pure pleasure. For some 20 years air travel has increased CO2 emmissions by over 200%.
-check tire pressure often. Correct pressure improves fuel consumption up to 3%. Each liter of gasoline saved avoids the emision of 3 kilograms of CO2.
-plant trees. A hectare of trees can eliminate within a year the same quantity of CO2 that four families produce in that same time. A single tree eliminates a ton of C02 during its life.
